Future Projects
There are wild horses running on the coastal strip near Eneabba that are reputed to have been there since World War 2. Eneabba lies north of Perth, between Jurien and Dongara.
The numbers did escalate at one stage but have been reduced unfortunately mainly by humans...they became a source of cheap bait for the Cray fisherman of the district.
There are only between 7 and 10 remaining and even these are under threat...there was a recent incident of a horse being killed by a crossbow.
We have decided to act and try and secure the remaining horses since their future looks bleak....we are seeking any information about the group , past or present, which will help with the project.
We are hoping to trap the horses on water with Feb and March being optimal times , and a local landowner has offered to help with the use of his troughs.
We will keep the information updated as time draws nearer but if anyone can offer any information of help please contact us on…
Tanami Horses
There is a station in the Tanami area of central Australia that is under pressure to de-stock the horses. They are competing with the cattle for precious resources and the owners have reluctantly decided that the horse numbers have to be reduced. At this stage we know there are about 600 and the majority are colored. The present owners have been there for approximately 50 years and haven't introduced any new stock so we are safe to assume that these are old bloodline pinto stock horses; probably originating from the Sydney Kidman imported British bloodlines.
Efforts are being made to remove as many of the horses as possible for re-homing with a fair bit of interest coming from the Eastern States. I feel that we could generate enough demand from the west to warrant bringing back a truckload. At the moment we already have a fair number of people looking for pinto horses.
Our biggest hurdle is finding a truck at a price that makes it financially feasible...has anyone out there got a truck [hopefully reliable!] that they would consider either selling or hiring at a reasonable rate so that we can consider this trip.? Fuel costs will be high so if we can minimise truck costs then the horses will be affordable. We will also consider supplying horses as a truck fee.
We will keep you posted with any further developments ...but anyone interested or able to help please contact us on..
Lake Muir
Lake Muir lies between Manjimup and Rocky Gully on the Muir Highway. There are a group of brumbies there that date back to the remount days...apparently the original books recording the breeding are still in existence...we would love to see them!
The numbers are uncertain at this stage but feed is not particularly abundant and horses have been lost there in bad years. They are reputedly smaller pony types; 13 to 14hh; solid colours and buckskins but tough and sure footed. The locals have offered to take us on a trip to see if we can photograph them and estimate numbers etc.
The area is due to be rezoned to National Park and so the horses will have to be removed. We aim to work in conjunction with the DEC on the project rather than have the horses shot out... It sounds as if there are some good animals out there still and we would like to give them a chance.
Anyone with any information please contact me on..
